Parakeets!
Parakeets are beautifully colored little birds that are jam packed with energy. Parakeets are also commonly called Budgies, which is short for Budgerigars. These birds have a lot in common with the bigger parrots, they just go faster. They are very social and and talkative. They make very good starter birds; they are not very hard to take care of but still need attention.

Parakeet Coloring: I Spy A Rainbow
Parakeets are usually colored with green and yellow or blue and white. They all have black and most have a violet patch. They can come in any shade and pattern. The cere, which is the nose area, is a tan color as a young bird but when they mature, the female stays tan and the male turns a dark purple or blue. As a young bird they will have black stripes on the head, from the cere, all the way down the neck. As the bird ages or matures, these stripes will start fading from the cere.
Parakeet Behavior: The Energizer Bird
They are very playful birds; they will always be busy doing something, either flying here or there or exploring different places. They are also quite the acrobats and will keep you laughing. They are good for children because as long as you keep them generally tame, they rarely bite and often if they do it is not hard. Many times when they do bite, they just want to let you know not to do what you are doing, so you would just need to back off for a couple minutes. Although, since they are so small you must supervise children around them, it would not take much to hurt or kill them. They can be kept either by themselves or in a flock. They also get along with other types of birds, although, you must still keep an eye on them because of their hyper nature, they may annoy the other animals. When it comes to breeding time, the males will often become slightly destructive. For example, they may tear up sand paper perches or rip paper. The males may also appear more white in color.
Parakeet Noise Level: The Mini Singing Parrot
They can sing very beautiful songs, although, if they are not kept happy they may start chattering quite a bit.The best way to keep them happy is to make sure they have a good supply of food, plenty of toys, and some time out of the cage. Many people say that they are good starter birds but they still need attention. Some people say that these birds are wonderful talkers but it all depends on if you train them and when you train them. If you want a Parakeet to talk, you must train them before they fully mature, this time is between 2 and 6 months of age. However since these birds do everything twice as fast as other parrots, you sometimes can't understand what they are saying due to the words being too fast.
Common Problems
One thing that can be a problem with parakeets is that they can be quite noisy. If you don't give parakeets enough toys and things to do their beautiful songs can turn annoying. They also enjoy getting out and being messed with but if they are left alone, they can get noisy too. The same thing can happen if they do not have enough food or water. You can easily distract them but giving them different toys, a bird bath to play in, or get them out for a while. This does take time, so even though they are small and easier to take care of, they still take a lot of time to keep them.
Another problem can be their size. Since they are so small, they can be very flighty. This is their defense because they know they have no chance against someone who is so much larger than them. Their size also makes it hard to cuddle them and they may not be as tame as a bigger bird word be. This isn't to say that it is impossible, just that it will take more work because of their hesitation to us.
