Parakeet Color Mutations
Normal Green Series
The natural coloring of the parakeets is green and yellow, however, now there are many different types of color mutations. There are many different variations of the normal green series. They may be light green, dark green, olive green or anything in between. To the left is a picture of a example of a young normal green. The majority of it's coloring is green. As you can see the head is a yellow with barring on the back of its head. This barring will fade with age; it will recede from the beak back. The small violet patches will be seen on all normal coloring. The eyes are also black.
Normal Blue Series
In the normal blue series, there are also many different variations. They could be sky blue, cobalt, mauve or anything in between. To the right is a picture of a example of a normal blue. The coloring is dominantly blue and in this case a sky blue. The head is white, this is a characteristic of the blue series. It is also possible for them to have a yellow head. You can also see the way the barring fades or recedes. You can also see that the blue series has the violet patches, although this one in darker.
Lutino
The picture on the left is an example of a Lutino. The Lutino is basically the albino of the green series. They have a rich yellow color. Instead of the violet patches, they have white. The eyes are also a dark red instead of the black. Because of its rich color, it continues to be a very popular bird.
Albino
On the right is a close example of a Albino parakeet. An Albino is pure white. They will have red eyes and pink legs. The beak should be a pale yellow color.
Pied
The photos above are all types of Pied parakeets. They are very sporadic in color because they have an absence of dark pigment. There are dominant and recessive Pied parakeets. You can tell the difference between them by the coloring around the face. The dominant Pied has the same markings as the normal series, where as the recessive will not have those markings.
