Our Mission
I am dedicated to help bird owners and potential bird owners get the information they need to care for their bird. I understand that my experiences and experiences of others are very valuable and should be shared. I have shared the frustration of trying to find helpful information but coming up empty. I want to bring as much information together for bird owners to have one stop for information instead of search and only finding bits and pieces. This will always be an ongoing process since their will always be new information and stories to share. I hope to create a community of people who love birds whether you have birds, a breeder or just enjoy looking at them.
My Story
My mother and I have always loved pets; when I went away to college, the apartment didn't allow pets other than fish and birds. We tried to do get fish but they don't have the cuddle and petting factors. We then went shopping for a parakeet as a birthday present; that was what started it all. We had a problem though, I liked one parakeet and she liked a different one. We ended up get both, Bella and Boo. Sadly, Bella, my parakeet, passed away after a couple months. My mom found a hand fed baby parrotlet for me. When we got Athena and spent time with her, we was both hooked. Soon, my mom had taken in a rescue cocketiel, JJ. He brought so much joy into both of our lives. When we saw more opportunities to save more birds, we couldn't help but take them in. All of us have been much happier ever since. We would still like to continue to grow our family and help others.
My Family
Athena
This is Athena; she is my parrotlet. I bought her from a local breeder and got to be there for some of her hand feedings. She is very independent and can be quite the character. She enjoys watching birds outside the window with me. She loves seeing and being around small birds. Like most parrotlets, she is not afraid of anything and will take anyone on. She loves to eat, always has, and she won't hesitate to take something away even if its for me. She doesn't know the meaning of share and will chase off anyone that tries to.
J.J.
This is J.J., he's our rescue Cockatiel. We never heard what the living conditions were that he was rescued from just that he had been handed around some after he was rescued and that he was not very tame. When he came to us, his cage was not kept very clean and he was quite frightened. He had his full wings, so was sometimes hard to manage. We first started with working on him slowly on trying to get close but in was going a little too slow for someone who had wanted a bird for so long. I ended up surprising him into stepping up before he knew what was going on. Ever since he has been a pretty well behaved bird. When we brought home a female Cockatiel, he fell for her and stepped up to fatherhood right away for her. He is a very proud bird and enjoys his wings and independence.
Crickie
This is Crickie, a female Cockatiel and a rescue bird. We got her from a local pet store that had about 7 or more Cockatiels in it and she was the only female. She was orginally supposed to be called Cricket but we thought Crickie was cuter. She has been very timid ever since we got her. She doesn't act like she has been handled at all and she cannot grip strongly with her feet. Her feathers had also been very damaged from that cage. We soon learned after getting her, she had been carrying eggs. After having her for about a month or two, we figured out that she has a bag habit of plucking feathers, she almost enjoys just chewing on the feathers. She still seems pretty wary of us but she does know that we won't hurt her.
Butters
This is Butters, a male Cockatiel and a rescue bird too. He lived in the same conditions that Crickie did and was there for 5 to 6 years. He was also the breeder for a while and was the alpha male in the cage. They said that he was always picking on all the others. They also said that he would lure you in by looking all sweet and then bite you. Once I worked through him biting us all the time we found out that he is actually very cuddly. He loves to be with people and wants to petted. He allows us to break open pin feathers and pick him up. He still bites here and there but it is usually for his safety. He has extremely bad balance and almost no gripping strength, so when he gets picked up sometimes he will hold on for dear life. Although he is a real sweetheart and very loving. He also loves to whistle and will do it often. He doesn't really like being too close to the other birds except for J.J.
Freya
This is Freya, she is the baby of the family. When we bought Crickie, little did we know that she was about to laid eggs. We never thought that any of the eggs would make it but she did. She went through a lot when she was little; Crickie likes to pull feathers and Freya was always there and the victim. Even though it is rare for females to whistle, she sure does. She was raised around 2 really big whistlers and I would always join in too. She started out trying to whistle very very early. Now that she knows how is whistle and sing, it's hard to get her to be quiet. Any little thing may get her started and she tries to sing to anyone she can find; many of the other birds try to run away. She is a very independent bird, she has a mind of her own and won't let anyone hold her down.
Isis
This is Isis, the female Sun Conure. She had been with a different family for 4 to 5 months. Her and Osiris did not have many toys in their cage and it wasn't cleaned well. She displayed characteristics of not being handled much, if at all. She was extremely scared when we got her and it took a lot of work to get her calmed down. All of her feathers were in really bad condition. Now that she has tamed down, she is very curious. She enjoys cleaning people's faces and watching the birds out the window. She also likes napping under the covers with us while we are watching tv. She also likes to take my earring out of my ear, even though I freak out every time. She love to take baths in the water dish on her stand and she will include anyone near in her bath too.
Osiris
This is Osiris, the male Sun Conure. He came from the same conditions that Isis did. His wing and tail feathers were also in pretty bad condition but they were not all broken like Isis's feathers were. He also showed some signs of not being handled and not having toys. From the very beginning, he was scared but very curious. Now that we have worked with him and tamed him down, he is very outgoing and will try to grab ahold of your shirt while passing by his cage. He is a glutton for attention and is always getting in some kind of trouble. He is a big acrobat and loves hanging by one foot. He always is chewing on something, whether it being wood, leather or clothe. He love getting baths in the shower and often he ends up being drenched.
